EOBase Narrative of the trip to New Brunswick, December 2009.

12 December 2009

1) Canada: Ontario: Grenville County: Oxford-on-Rideau: Bishops Mills General Store. 31B/13, UTM 18TVE46 446 688.4 44.87282N 75.70097W. TIME: 1050. AIR TEMP: -4, sunny, Beaufort light breeze. ROUTE: Co Road 18, Highway 401, Autoroutes 20, 540, 40, 25, 20, Hwys 2, 7. OBSERVER: Frederick W. Schueler, Aleta Karstad Schueler. bhhzlog, departure (departure) (event). natural history, drive. 164295 km, to Saint John with vehicle-full load of specimens. . . . (in a slow schuelerian sort of way). We're planning to be down to Saint John and back by Tuesday, with so many specimens stuffed into the Mercedes that we argue about bringing another pair of shoes, and we've had to cut off the corners of some boxes to fit them into the vehicle. Now the data for the specimens are on the key drive and the computer that we're bringing, and Aleta has finished thermosing the Bear soup, coffee, and tea, that's to hydrate us, and the sandwiches, vegetables, and Smart Food popcorn that's to nourish us, along the way.

We've printed out the directions to McAlpines, and for getting through Montreal, and concluded that there's not enough Phragmites (Reed) waypoints along the route to warrant explicitly trying to revisit the stands seen in 2001, Aleta has raw material ready for the cards she hopes to leave at the New Brunswick Museum bookshop, and the cell-phone internet stick, and we're off.

moved 21.7 km SE.
2) Edwardsburgh: Highway 401/Co Road 18, Prescott. 31B/12, 44.72278N 75.52524W TIME: 1137:13. AIR TEMP: -4, sunny, hazy, breezy. HABITAT: superhwy roadside. 2009/311/c, Phragmites australis SUBSPECIES:australis (Plant). dominant herb, in fruit, dead, seen, driveby. WAYPT/019, almost continuous around interchange. This was the beginning of a spasmodic survey of Phragmites (Reed) along Highway 401 and Autoroute 20 coming into Montreal. The GPS unit wouldn't work when plugged into the computer, so it was all done by hand, and the stands were so abundant and many of them so graduated into one another, or so whispy, that it was hard to even say what was a stand, let alone figure out an appropriate strategy for waypointing or counting them.

From Fredericton you will come down Highway 7. The drive from Fredericton to Grand Bay-Westfield, where we live, is about 1 hour. Take Exit 80 into Grand Bay-Westfield. The road will loop down to River Vally Drive, where there will be a stop sign and a flashing yellow light. Turn right onto River Valley Drive (don't cross the road onto the bridge which crosses the Nerepis River) and proceed about 6-7 km. You will pass the entry for the Westfield Ferry on your left (there is convenience store on the right opposite) at about the 3 km mark; keep going, you will proceed up a fairly steep hill and it will level out. At about the 6.5 km mark you will see the local rink/arena on your right. Slow down and watch for Epworth Park Road on your left. Turn left onto Epworth Park Road (you will almost immediately cross a railway track; Star-key Garage and Waynes Auto World on your immediate left) and proceed about 200 m to the first intersection.

Go through the intersection and the road becomes Central Avenue and goes uphill. Continue on Central Avenue to the end of the road. Central Avenue twists to the left and then drops down a steep grade to the water. There a t-junction at the end of Central Avenue, Young Street. Turn right onto Young and we are the first house on the left (water-side) immediately after you take the turn. There is a large cedar hedge and an old-style shingled garage with the number 23 on it near the road. The house is two story with a turret on the right side, and is set back on the slope over-looking the river, with a series of 24 steps down to the front door (not great for old folks!). My home number is 738-2365, my work number 643-2345. Call on route and have a safe drive. Look forward to seeing you. Don.

One of the big trucks was as spooky as a Moose, because it's tail lights were not working, and the reflectors dusted with snow so they didn't even work, and as we approached it from behind it gradually became visible as a black hole in the glare on the road from tail lights of the trucks ahead of it! " Our sleep was interrupted by some of the noisiest and most prolonged snow removal we've ever heard, but probably this is routine in urban situations. This climaxed (ca 04h00, EST) as the lot we were parked in was plowed (at last, carefully around us!), and then we just had the challenge of keeping cold air from seeping in under the stiffness of the super-warm sleeping bag Don McAlpine had lent us. It would have been warmer used closed than open, but there wouldn't have been room for both of us.

159) Cap Martin at Auto Route 20 exit/rest area. 47.35516N 70.08107W TIME: 1417-1630. AIR TEMP: -14, clear, sunset, breezy. HABITAT: highly disturbed fleuve-estuary shore at superhwy roadside. 2009/323/-, datasheet (event). nat.hist., water colour. WAYPT/161, stopped here for daily watercolour painting. DATASHEET SUMMARY: Land ownership is by the Crown. The locality is based on global positioning (+/- 7 m). The diel period was cooling afternoon. The sky was clear, cloud cover 40%. There was no precipitation. The wind was Beaufort 4 Force from the NW. Weather for the past 48 hr was seasonally normal temperatures (with fluctuations) seasonally normal moisture. About 30 cm of snow on the ground.

The site was in/on flueve-shore shallow valley. Bedrock was not exposed, doubtless igneous. Soil moisture was frozen. The terrestrial vegetation was scrappy parkland (40% wooded) shore & roadside grassland. DOMINANT SPECIES: Populus tremuloides, Phragmites (Reed), Picea (Spruce), Arctium (Burrdock) along trail. I made a collection of the different types of Phragmites (Reed) along the road W of us.

Human impact on the site included superhwy interchange, Eel fishing gear on shore, & recreational trails. Wetlands were fringing marshes. Development stage of Typha latifolia (Broad-leaved Cattail) was dry seedheads. Water at the site was permanent natural estuarine bay/fleuve & excavated roadside ditches. Water level was tidal, seasonally normal. The bottom was boulders & cobbles, as far as could be seen. Water quality was cloudy brown. Water movement was rising & then falling tide, moving 70-50% ice cover past the shore. Water temperature 0 C, with floating packs of dirty ice.

Even at zero, or whatever themperature, the water throws up so much heat that the band of snow along the far shore twinkles like a star, and the far W end of the mountains is a snout rather than an horizon.

The only Bird detected was a single cf Eremophila call, and the only Mammal a cf Sorex (Shrew) tunnel going down into the snow.

15h09: 50% open water opening up among the ice as the tide continues to flow upstream.

15h27: 80% ice cover.

15h43: the ice downstream is an aqua green-grey in the face of the yellow-orange setting Sun, whicha lso makes the far hills an improbable orange-purple.

15h46: wind picking up as the Sun sets behind a low bank of clouds.

16h05: upstream current has very much slowed.

16h13: slack water.

16h21: ebb has begun as we prepare to leave.

HABITAT: brightly lit superhwy interchange. 2009/333/e, visit () (event). natural history, driveby, dazzled. WAYPT/165, a staggering display of road lighting. For km after km these lights seem to signal that in the early 1970 s when these roads were built the Quebec government felt so awash in "free" James Bay and Churchill Falls hydro that there was no call to moderate or stint its expenditure.

HABITAT: urban superhwy. 2009/333/g, visit () (event). drive. midpoint of long delay in Montreal. After we'd successfully navigated most of the way through Montreal, there was a slowdown to standstill, and we crept about a kilometre over the course of two and a half hours. Another hour spent creeping with thousands of other vehicles along the detour on Anciens-Combattants to Highway 20 west, brought us to this bridge over Highway 40 and we could see flashing lights of police and perhaps rescue vehicles around whatever horrible thing had happened, but could not make out anything that looked like an accident.

HABITAT: gravel/hedge/paved area around store building in rural village on limestone plain. 2009/333/g, arrival () (event). drive. WAYPT/167, from New Brunswick. We're home and the vehicle is unpacked, including the bag of live Bar Road Mytilus and the can of New Brunswick Museum Dermestes. Roads were dry all the way from the New Brunswick/Quebec border, and we enjoyed good music and a good discussion of some Fragile Inheritance fund-raising ideas. It was a good trip all round, and everything looks to be in good order here. We're happy to crawl into our own bed.
